At IND Drums USA, we believe that environmental responsibility and good business go hand in hand. Our sustainable practices help our customers reduce their environmental impact while also providing cost-effective solutions for their container needs.
The Circular Economy in Action
Our approach embraces the principles of the circular economy. Rather than the traditional linear model of "make, use, dispose," we help keep materials in use for as long as possible through reconditioning and recycling, extracting maximum value while minimizing waste.
Our Sustainability Initiatives
How we minimize environmental impact at every step
Drum Reconditioning
Our state-of-the-art reconditioning process extends the useful life of drums by 3-5 additional cycles. Each reconditioned drum saves the energy and raw materials required to manufacture a new container, significantly reducing environmental impact.
- Thorough cleaning removes all residues safely
- Structural repairs restore drum integrity
- Testing ensures each drum meets UN/DOT standards
- New gaskets and bungs as needed
- Exterior refinishing available
Material Recovery
When drums reach the end of their useful life and cannot be reconditioned, we ensure maximum material recovery through responsible recycling. Steel, plastic, and other materials are processed and returned to manufacturing supply chains.
- Steel drums shredded and sent to steel mills
- HDPE plastic drums processed into pellets
- Fiber drums composted or recycled into paperboard
- Metal components separated and recycled
- Proper disposal of any hazardous residues
Waste Reduction
We minimize waste at every step of our operations, from efficient transportation routing to responsible handling of residual materials. Our goal is to ensure that nothing goes to waste that could be reused or recycled.
- Route optimization reduces transportation emissions
- Consolidation of shipments minimizes trips
- Residue management ensures proper handling
- Packaging materials reused or recycled
- Continuous process improvement
Carbon Footprint
By reconditioning and recycling drums locally, we significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with manufacturing new containers. Our regional processing approach minimizes transportation distances.
- Local processing reduces transportation emissions
- Energy-efficient equipment in our facilities
- Fleet optimization for fuel efficiency
- Partnership with regional recyclers
- Working toward carbon-neutral operations
Environmental Benefits
The positive impact of our sustainable practices
Reduced Raw Material Consumption
Every reconditioned drum represents raw materials that didn't need to be extracted from the earth. Steel production requires iron ore mining and significant energy; plastic production requires petroleum. By extending drum life, we reduce demand for these resources.
Energy Savings
Manufacturing new steel drums requires melting iron ore at extremely high temperatures. Reconditioning existing drums uses a fraction of that energy. The energy saved by reconditioning one steel drum could power a home for several hours.
Landfill Diversion
Industrial drums take up significant space in landfills and can take decades to decompose (steel) or centuries (plastic). Through reconditioning and recycling, we keep these materials out of landfills and in productive use.
Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Steel and plastic production are both significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. By reducing the need for new drum production through reconditioning and recycling, we help reduce industrial carbon emissions.
Our Sustainable Process
How we maximize the value of every drum
Collection & Transportation
We coordinate efficient pickup of drums from your facility. Our logistics team optimizes routes to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.
Inspection & Sorting
Each drum is inspected to determine if it can be reconditioned or should be recycled. Drums are sorted by material type and condition.
Reconditioning or Recycling
Viable drums go through our reconditioning process. Drums that cannot be reconditioned are prepared for material recovery recycling.
Quality Assurance
Reconditioned drums undergo rigorous testing. Recycled materials are processed to meet quality standards for reuse in manufacturing.
Return to Service
Reconditioned drums are returned to the supply chain for reuse. Recycled materials become raw materials for new products.
Certifications & Compliance
Our commitment to standards and regulations
EPA Compliance
All our processes comply with EPA regulations for waste handling and disposal. We maintain required documentation for hazardous material management.
UN/DOT Certification
Our reconditioned drums meet UN and DOT specifications for the safe transport of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
ISO 9001 Quality Standards
Our quality management system follows ISO 9001 guidelines, ensuring consistent quality in all our operations.
OSHA Safety Compliance
We maintain strict adherence to OSHA safety standards, protecting our workers and ensuring safe handling of all materials.
